New Stuff Using an iPhone 4

On Friday before I left to go to Columbus and see The Fuss with Room & Board at the TreeBar, I received my iPhone 4 in the mail from Verizon. I decided to test out the video camera quality in comparison to the Sony HD Bloggie. Thought the Bloggie is in 1080 and the iPhone is in 720 resolution, I felt the iPhone gave me better video & audio quality overall than the Bloggie.

Both files require some extra processing on my end if I chose to edit them through Final Cut Pro (which I do). Then, to (hopefully) get all the files to be somewhat compatible for future video compilations, I have to process the iPhone videos in such a way as to increase the resolution (I think). I am in no way a professional in regards to video so maybe I'm wrong on some of this stuff which also brings the realization it might not hurt to take some sort of classes on this stuff to better understand how to do the things I want to do with the footage I have. Since the iPhone is very new to me, I'm sure I will figure out other tricks as I have with the files over the last few years to make my work easier.

At this point though, even with the preferred picture & audio quality of the iPhone, I figure I will still use the Bloggie quite a bit primarily due to limitations to the amount of drive space on the iPhone to store the video vs. the Bloggie since the iPhone has apps & music that I use besides the camera.

Anyway, here is an example of the video quality from the iPhone. Not sure how many more clips I will use it for.

On March 16th while there were a lot of folks out drinking and stumbling around the Southside in Pittsburgh (and basically anywhere there were bars) I went to see an old friend from college, Bryan Yost, play with his band, The End Of The Ocean, at 222 Ormsby. I showed up too late for a few of the bands but I did get to see The End Of The Ocean and enjoyed the newer music a lot.

On March 25th I went to Mr. Smalls to see The Chariot play on the Metalcore Marathon Tour. They were the band I most wanted to see but unfortunate circumstances at work led to me having to be at a mandatory meeting during the time I usually sleep so I ended up sleeping later than I would have liked and ended up running a little late to the show. I caught the very end of The Chariot's set. It still makes me a bit angry haha. For Today, The Devil Wears Prada & As I Lay Dying were also on the tour.

On March 26th, I found out about a show happening that night at Garfield Artworks that my friend, Derek Zanetti would be performing at as The Homeless Gospel Choir. He would be sharing the stage with a great band from Michigan called The Soil & The Sun who were touring through with Kellen & Me. It was a real great show!

Video footage from The 86

After my time ended doing shows at Covenant, I got involved with some other friends and from that came "The 86." It's a venue in Cincinnati, Ohio that is alcohol free and serves the best coffee you will find anywhere roasted on site by La Terza. From the time of the first show and continuing through November 2012 I filmed at least a clip of one song from most every artist/band that has performed at the club, I also have put together clips of shenanigans and such things involving the folks at The 86.

This was a small show but the music was pretty incredible. The lighting at Roboto is lacking but I liked the effect it made so I didn't edit the exposure on these. I went to this show to see my old friend Jonathan Hape. Rocknroll Weekend: 02.16-17.13

Examples of why I love live music were quite evident this weekend. I took in a couple shows in Ohio and got to see a lot of friends I haven't seen too much of since moving to Pittsburgh. That alone is worth driving a few hours for me as I will do from time to time.

Saturday I got to see 2 of my favorite Cincinnati area locals on one bill and they did not disappoint. Neither band has been playing shows much over the last year or so making it all the more special to see them when I had the chance and even better together. Both bands have a sound I really enjoy and get regular play on my iPod. I also speak of them quite often when I talk of good music that comes from the Cincy scene. I also got to see them in a recently opened venue that I hadn't had the chance of going to before I left.

One big reason that I love live music is that the moment will never be lived again. Some bands can be a bit monotonous, having such a scripted set that you know pretty much exactly what may happen any given night you watch them play but most of the time there is at least one variable that makes each night unlike any other.

On this night, Beneath The Oaks debuted their new drummer making a new stage dynamic unlike any other time they have played. It also seemed the some songs had slightly changed arrangements from both the e.p. recordings and other times I have had the privelege of seeing the band. I was able to capture a clip of the song Depths.

The Never Setting Suns decided to play a longer set (which included both Spheres & Into Your Hands in their entirety but separated by the rest of the set...I don't recall seeing that before). I actually filmed both songs and intended to upload the clip for Into Your Hands but something happened to the file and it was not readable by my programs on my Mac. During Into Your Hands, Corey lost his balance and landed on Tyler's kick drum. After the show, it was realized that Corey cracked the plastic of the kick drum. The set was somewhat different in that the band jammed as Corey put it, much like they do when they practice. There was little said between songs. Spheres is always a good song to capture live on video because of all the different dynamics that got into the 10+ minutes of the song. This night was no different.

On Sunday, I was in Columbus to see Project 86 as well as several other bands on the bill.

To Kill A Monster is from Columbus and my friend Marco talked about how good they were. I also enjoyed them and captured a song that I believe has a working title of "Confetti." I figure you can't go wrong with a little cowbell.

OceanSpeak was next, also from the Columbus area. I never heard of this band but I believe they have to be making a name for themselves with the unique performance they have. The song I captured ends with the vocalist/guitarist playing drums.

Similar to OceanSpeak, I captured a song by Come Wind that featured all the members doing some form of percussion. This band I believe is from Ohio as well but have had their music played nationally through RadioU & TVU.

Project 86 closed out the night before things switched over to the reggae night. I wish I would have filmed Spy Hunter. This was a moment that made this set unique from all the rest by Project 86 (though I can't think of any 2 times that I have seen this band that I would say were the same). Andrew was crowd surfing and the mic came unplugged. During the verse instead of trying to plug back in, Andrew jumped in the mosh pit. When he ended up on stage he continued to work the crowd for the sing a long parts while tossing the drummers cymbals around. This was an awesome set overall by Project 86. I ended up capturing a new song titled S.O.T.S.

Bands are touring less & less because people aren't coming out to support. Both of these nights were fairly well supported and all the bands made it worthwhile for the cover charges we paid to see them. I sincerely hope the apathy I have seen over the recent years in the music scenes dies. Live music is meant to be seen LIVE. I film these clips (and sometimes whole sets) for the purpose of trying to relive the experience in a small way. Even now, as I watch them I wish i could go back in time and be there again. You will never have the same feeling you get when you are there when you watch these & other clips on YouTube or even online "live" performances. If you love the bands you listen to and care about the people involved, you really need to come out to shows and support and experience the moment.

Moving: Cincinnati To Pittsburgh - November 2012

In November, I moved to Pittsburgh. If you pay any attention to this blog you realized this when there was a delay of postings for a while.

I made this video clip which highlighted the Witler years of the 5+ years that I lived in Cincinnati as well as the process of moving to Pittsburgh where I am currently living in the Greenway Community House with my friends Dylan, Kathryn, & Al.

I used the music or LIVE video clips of the following artists: Jonezetta, Deadhorse, Listener (w/ The Homeless Gospel Choir), Pomegranates, Crash Cap Hooligans, & Aaron Lee Martin.

The Homeless Gospel Choir & Groundhog Day: February 2013

On Friday I dropped into a house show that my friend Derek was playing. I filmed a clip of the song "Capitalismo" (by The Homeless Gospel Choir). I left the show early (and arrived a bit late due to other commitments) for work, this was the only clip from the show I got.

Saturday was Groundhog Day. Since I was at work until 10am, I was not able to go to Punxsutawney to experience this holiday the proper way. My uncle, who was born on Groundhog Day saw his shadow and therefore prognosticated six more weeks of winter (much like the calendar says) but Phil did not claiming we'd have an early spring. I watched it as I believed it was shown on the movie by watching KDKA-TV. I later watched the movie and realized they used a station called WPGH...opps! haha.

After leaving work I went to my first real Pittsburgh Penguins game at Consol Energy Center (and first real one in Pittsburgh) as they beat the New Jersey Devils 5-1. After a little nap, I met with my friend Joe for his 30th birthday at Roland's Seafood Bar & Grill where he works.
