A Shared Life: Spring In Chicago (April - June 2026)

The footage from this project starts with the beginning of April and our Easter trip to Pennsylvania. It ends with the end of June as the Summer begins before we head off to Audiofeed. We had a few family visits and visits to family during this period both for my family and Elphie's family. We were able to get out to visit with my cousin Jill a couple of times which is nice. She doesn't live that far away but it just hadn't really worked out to get to see her much the last few years. We experienced some extreme weather as Spring went along, possibly even driving into a tornado as we returned home one evening.

The project runs a bit longer than I intended or expected. This is due in part to the extreme weather events.
04.01.2026 - 04.13.2026
On Thursday April 2nd, 2026, Elphie and I left to go to Pennsylvania to get my car inspection done and visit with family for Easter. My parents had been around quite a bit in Chicago prior to this due to the cancer in my mom's eye but they were back in Pennsylvania so that's where we went for Easter. We drove from Chicago to Erie, Pennsylvania where we had a hotel for the night at Red Roof near Hallman dealership so I could bring the car in first thing in the morning. Along the way, we saw the Easter bunny in the University Park Mall in South Bend, Indiana. The trip was mostly uneventful. On Good Friday April 3rd, 2026, I got up early to take the car over to Hallman for the inspection and Auto Butler session. We were scheduled to check out of the hotel at 11am and so we did that and I walked over to the dealership to see if the car was ready. It took about another half hour. I got the car, returned to Red Roof to pick up our things and Elphie. I gave the Cherry Float Coca-Cola a taste test. The "cream soda" flavor was mostly all I tasted which I am not a fan of. I probably won't try it again. We got to Warren, PA in the early afternoon and hung out with family, watching some Pittsburgh Pirates baseball. My parents two cats were caught grooming each other. On Easter Sunday April 5th, 2026, we attended church and had family dinner compliments of Bob Evans. Uncle Steve and Great Aunt Nancy came over. My mom gave us Easter baskets. I captured some footage of the daffodils in the yard and in the house as well as we watched the Pirates again. We drove back to Chicago on Monday April 6th, 2026. It was another rather uneventful drive which is good.

On Thursday April 9th, 2026, Elphie gave Stein a bunch of catnip and captured footage of the result. I wore my "going postal" Flatfoot 56 shirt and seemed fitting with the current situation at work. We vistied my cousin Jill and her husband Brent and kid Arch in Barrington over the weekend on Saturday April 11th, and Sunday April 12th, 2026. Jill was on call in the Emergency Room while we were there and had to step out for a surgery. My parents had also been staying there due to being close to the radiation center for the eye treatment. We had a really good pizza from La Pizza Via and it was fun to hang out. On our way out of town we stopped in a McDonald's we were told was "bougie." It didn't look all that much different from any other McDonald's we've been in. Back at home while watching hockey, Stein made sure to be in contact with both Elphie and I.

LIVE @ Schubas Tavern (04.14.2026)
On Tuesday April 14th, 2026, The Castros came through Chicago on a tour with Raynes at Schuba's Tavern. Marco insisted on getting us on the guest list and so we accepted. I captured a new cover song that The Castros performed from Bad Bunny and Ricky Martin (performed during the Super Bowl halftime show). We watched about half of Raynes before heading out. Elphie and I both felt tired and Elphie's commute to get to the show had worn her out.

I captured some footage of geese and their goslings on the roof deck of the Truman College parking garage in the morning as I was making my way to work. As we arrived at Schuba's, I captured some footage outside of the building and a historical marker.

04.15.2026 - 05.13.2026
There was a significant fog over parts of Chicago during my commute home on Thursday April 16th, 2026. It appeared to be mostly a north side event but as I drove south on Lake Shore Drive, it showed to be pushing in from Lake Michigan and to the south. Once I crossed the Chicago River, things cleared up for the most part, especially inland. There was also protesting on the pedestrian bridge to North Avenue Beach against ICE. On Friday April 17th, 2026, we hung out at J.P.U.S.A. for the evening with The Castros, Shaws, Colleen Davick, and a few others. A storm hit while we were there and we went to view it from the windows at the roof. On Saturday April 18th, 2026, Elphie wanted to experience a confessional booth so we visited Queen Of All Saints Basilica. It was an interesting experience. I noticed a stained glass for Saint Bridget of Sweden. On the way home, we encountered a crash on the express lanes of the highway. One of the cars appeared to be driving away. Later, we saw the aftermath of a crash into a car dealership on Western Avenue.

After a bad start to the playoffs for the Pittsburgh Penguins, on Saturday April 25th, 2026, I decided to break out my first hockey jersey of Darius Kasparaitis in hopes to bring about the pain he was known for inflicting on the Philadelphia Flyers. It worked so I did the same on Monday April 27th, 2026 with my James Neal jersey. The hockey jersey magic wore out on my birthday unfortunately.

Wednesday April 29th, 2026 was my 46th, birthday. The Penguins game didn't go so well but Elphie made french toast and brownies to celebrate the day. My parents arrived for my mom's follow-up appointment. On Thursday April 30th 2026, I captured Buckingham Fountain flowing for the first time. Seems it might have been a test run though. I also captured the large sink hole that developed near work on Clifton Avenue.

On Friday May 1st, 2026, my parents apparently got caught in a May Day protest. That evening we went to The Patio for BBQ dinner. I got too close to a fence post and did some damage to my car, unfortunately. This just after paying it off. On Saturday May 2nd, 2026, we got up and went to Andersonville to have brunch at Svea. While waiting and then after, we went over to the Swedish American Museum. We then drove north to Wisconsin to take my parents to the Mars Cheese Castle. On the way back south we took a quick detour to drive by the gate of Michael Jordan's mansion in Highland Park before continuing to Rosemont for the Chicago Wolves playoff hockey game against the Texas Stars. The Wolves won! On Sunday May 3rd, 2026, Elphie stopped in Jewel-Osco to visit the pharmacy and encountered Cinco de Mayo festivities including a Mariachi band playing.

On Thursday May 7th, 2026, there was a ribbon cutting event at the location of the new men's shelter for Cornerstone called The Haven. There were all sorts of folks from various city of Chicago and Illinois governing offices and social service organizations. I was not prepared properly and didn't wear "professional" clothing. Oops. Hopefully we will be up and running with the new Haven site soon. On Saturdy May 9th, 2026, Elphie wanted to go to a Burlesque yard sale. It happened to be just down the street from The Haven and across from the local police district. After we were there for a bit and the Shaws arrived and checked things out, we went to The Alley where Elphie got a few things. We then headed back north to Outskirts Vintage and I stopped in Loud Pizza Records for a listening party to Social Distortion's Born To Kill. I picked up a couple other albums as well while I was there. I didn't win the raffle for the signed art piece. We went over to Byron's for dinner then visited Kate at Outskirts Vintage before heading home with a quick stop at Target.

On Wednesday May 13th, 2026, though she wasn't feeling well, it was the day Elphie celebrates her birthday. I set up her birthday decorations by her coffee mug for when she woke up.

LIVE @ Reggies (05.14.2026)
On Thursday May 14th, 2026, Elphie and I attended the ska show at Reggies. The show was in the restaurant. I had some obstacles to deal with on the commute home from work but we made it shortly after "doors open" and there was a booth open to sit to order our meal. DJ Chuck Wren spun his ska tunes throughout the night which always includes some interesting covers. The local band Tone Zone Skam opened the night, followed by The Write-Ups of Flint, Michigan and the headliner was Stop The Presses from Brooklyn, New York. I have enjoyed Stop The Presses over the last few years and it was cool to see them play again. I ended up capturing a new song performed. It seemed the set lengths went from longest to shortest on this night, ha!

LIVE @ Case Cafe (05.15.2026)
I went to a Casa Cafe show for the first time on Friday May 15th, 2026. Beton Arme was in from Montreal, Quebec, Canada and joined by Fuerza Bruta and Home Invasion. There are full sets available on YouTube from the night at the Midwest HxC page. I captured "Verdugo" during Fuerza Bruta's set. It was good to hang with the Bawinkel's a bit at the show. At the end of the night it appeared there were brass knuckles and an unspent rifle round on the floor. The brass knuckles turned out to be wooden.

LIVE during Slide Away Fest @ Aragon Ballroom (05.23.2026)
On Saturday May 23rd, 2026, I attended the second night of the Chicago edition of Slide Away Fest at Aragon Ballroom. HUM was the headliner and what drew me to the show. I guess I got lucky and found a ticket for $37 on Stubhub for this sold out show rather than the $70+ face value ticket.

On my way to the show, Chicago was engulfed in a dense fog. Down by Lake Michigan it was hard to see the boats on the water.

I really enjoyed this show of all shoe gaze type of bands. I captured "The Summoning" by HUM of their recent release Inlet. It's quite a long song but I like it quite a bit. I took a guess that it might be what was played at that point in the show looking at the setlist from the Brooklyn edition of Slide Away and seeing the set list from the Friday show at Aragon Ballroom. The other bands who played were Nothing, Chapterhouse, lovesliescrushing, Sunshy, and DIM. I will keep an eye out for other Sunshy and DIM shows as they are from Chicago and likely to play around the area.

LIVE during Church @ Liar's Club (05.24.2026)
On Sunday May 24th, 2026, Elphie and I attended the Sunday matinee show at Liar's Club known as "Church." Our friends Coxey's Army were on the bill. We decided to get Capriotti's since it was nearby. Turns out, Coxey's Army had the same idea and went there too! By the time we had arrived, they had finished and were loading in at Liar's Club. The show started on time. There was another one in the evening so they had to try to keep on time I think. The local band was The Homicidols and they opened the afternoon. Blind Adam was meant to play but had to drop out. The Old Breed played second with Coxey's Army closing the afternoon. I captured a bonus clip of Coxey's Army with The Old Breed covering the Cock Sparrer song "Working." It was nice to see our friends in Coxey's Army and hang with them for a bit until they needed to hit the road to get home.

05.25.2026 - 06.02.2026
On Monday May 25th, 2026, I took the day off for Memorial Day. We went out to visit with my cousin Jill in the suburbs and swim for the day. My cousin Doug, Jill's brother, was there with his wife Jamey as well as their mother Barbara. It was a nice visit.

On Wednesday May 27th, 2026, I captured the Buckingham Fountain shooting high on my commute to work. On my commute home, I noticed smoke in the sky to the south and captured that as well. It turned out to be a fire in a chemical plant near I-55. On Thursday May 28th, 2026, we got up early due to an extermination appointment that was scheduled...and then canceled. Elphie captured some photos of Stein in Sphinx mode. On Friday May 29th, 2026, Elphie captured some photos of Stein needing to touch us both while laying on our laps.

During my commute home on June 2nd, 2026, I encountered a wreck and then some military helicopters flying overhead.

LIVE @ Cobra Lounge (06.03.2026)
On Wednesday June 3rd, 2026, Elphie and I went to Cobra Lounge for the last show by '68 in Chicago. They were joined by Nate Bergman. I had not heard of Nate Bergman prior to this so I checked out how he would self describe and it was emo folk. Maybe that's country? Anyway, I captured a clip of his set. I was hoping to capture "Always Love" from '68 but they didn't end up playing that song. I ended up capturing "Will You There" instead. There were some technical issues so that might be why they didn't play as many songs as the some of the other shows but it was still a good time. Elphie met me there after work and after her therapy. While she waited in a nearby park, she captured footage of a large centipede type bug. Elphie got a salad in the restaurant and I got a couple slices of the pizza before the show. After the show, Elphie got in a confrontation with a delivery robot driving down the sidewalk toward Cobra Lounge as we left.

On my commute to work on Thursday June 4th, 2026, I again encountered military helicopters...again.

LIVE @ Chicago Street Pub in Joliet, Illinois (06.05.2026)
We decided to take the drive out to Joliet on Friday June 5th, 2026 to catch a free show at the Chicago Street Pub featuring SMFC with Tobin Bawinkel of 6'10 and Flatfoot 56 also playing. Our friend Bob had inquired on if I had any vinyl mailers sitting around and I did. It turned out he was asking on behalf of SMFC and so I loaded them in my car to take to this show. I captured "I Did Everything The Hard Way" from the SMFC set and "Travelers" from Tobin's set. Afterwards, we hung for quite a while with Andrew Tromaton outside. We also got to talk to Tommy of Toilet Rats a bit as he came to the show with Tobin. June 5th happens to be Gundlovdag in Denmark.

06.06.2026 - 06.13.2026
On Saturday June 6th, 2026, it was Sveriges Nationaldag. On Wednesday June 10th, 2026, I captured some of the storm aftermath on my commute home. There were a lot of trees down or at least limbs as Chicago experienced a derecho.

On Thursday June 11th, 2026, Elphie's brother Jason and sister-in-law Karen flew into town to visit and catch a couple baseball games. As we drove to pick them up, we saw more of the storm damage. We drove them back to the house from the airport. After some rest, we drove them around Chicago. We took them by the Buckingham Fountain, the Crown Fountain, the Bean, and down Magnificent Mile. We then took them up to Wrigley Field where a Mumford And Sons was scheduled that evening. I dropped them off to get some pictures then picked them up later. We then drove them into the Graceland Cemetery to show a few of the interesting things we've found there like Eternal Silence and Inez Clarke. Next we drove up to Wilmette to the Bahá'í Temple and the Home Alone House. We drove back south through Chicago and let them see the Museum of Science and Industry building and the new Barak Obama Presidential Center before heading back to the house for a little bit. We then left to go to Rate Field for a Chicago White Sox game against the Atlanta Braves. We had front row outfield seats but unfortunately the game was postponed due to the inclement weather in the area. As we left, we saw some significant cloud buildup to the south and west. As we drove down Pershing Road, the skies got dark and then the phones gave alerts of a Tornado Warning. I think I saw it to the south of us as we drove on Pershing Road toward home. There was a motorcyclist standing still on Pershing Road near the old factory buildings by McKinley Park. I drove around him then had to wait at the traffic light. We also had to wait at the traffic light at Western as well. As we crossed Western entering our neighborhood, the rain increased intensity significantly. It was hard to see and I hit a speed bump a lot faster than I would have liked. We got on our street and in front of our house when the rain began to swirl. I pulled into our driveway then we ran into the house, getting entirely soaked in that short distance! A tornado was confirmed not far from our neighborhood and we are assuming we experienced what was left of the storm. It may not have been a tornado but it sure seemed likely to be close to it.

On Friday June 12th, 2026, as I made my commute to work, I captured footage of the storm damage in the neighborhood. Jason explored the neighborhood and got some good phots of the storm damage. Elphie took Jason and Karen out into the neighborhood and downtown while I was as work. After work, I met up with Elphie, Jason and Karen outside Rate Field. I showed them where the home plate of the old Comiskey Park was located then we went into the game. Our seats were along the left field foul line this time. The game was the Chicago White Sox versus Los Angeles Dodgers. The White Sox won! I captured some of the firework show at the end of the game. As we made our way to where my car was parked in Chinatown on the Red Line, we noticed a significant accident on the highway. I was not able to capture it. It seemed to delay the train though. Back at the house, Jason and Karen had their first Malört experience.

Saturday June 13th, 2026, was our 11th Anniversary. Elphie and I didn't really do anything special. We needed to get some groceries and I captured some storm damage footage as we made the drive.

LIVE @ Everybody's Coffee (06.14.2026)
On Sunday June 14th, 2026, Elphie and I went to the 50th Anniversary Block Party for The Alley, meeting up with Kori and Robert. We caught a couple of the bands. We went to eat after at Jaiyen Sushi and Noodle. It seemed to be a bit of a fancy type restaurant. I was able to get some crab ragoons and decided to go with their signature sushi. It was a bit different than I expected and appeared to have red and black caviar on it. It was good.

After this, we went to Everybody's Coffee in Wilson Abbey because Christian Welch put together a show for Smell Before Rain with Great Horse! opening and Leper closing the night. Smell Before Rain features Kevin Schlereth's son Kevin III. I captured a song called "Six Flags Great America" from Great Horse! and "Far A Bheil Do Ghath (Where Is Thy Sting?)" from Leper along with a song from Smell Before Rain.

After the show, we got home to see Carolina win the Stanley Cup. That was fun.

06.15.2026 - 06.20.2026
On both Thursday June 18th, and Friday June 19th, 2026 I captured some footage of activism on the pedestrian bridge at North Avenue Beach over Lake Shore Drive. On June 18th, the sign was condemning ICE and current immigration policies. On June 19th it was Juneteenth and the protest was more geared toward racial issues in this country.

06.21.2026
On Father's Day, May 21st, 2026, Major League Rugby held its championship game at SeatGeek Stadium in Chicago. The Chicago Hounds ended up going undefeated and played the California Legion for the championship. Flatfoot 56 was booked to play a show on the stage after the game. It was a rainy day...a very rainy day. There appeared to be an accident on Archer Avenue as I drove to the stadium. Once I arrived, I got my poncho and headed out into the rain to get into the game. I made my way into SeatGeek Stadium following a guy who had an umbrella hat. Umbrellas are prohibited items and so security informed the man his umbrella hat violated the terms. He had to throw it away. Once I got inside the stadium I saw a booth selling Bridgeview BBQ and ordered a brisket sandwich. I got in the general area where I was meant to sit and stayed under the cover of the stands while I ate the sandwich. Shortly after I finished, Tobin Bawinkel looked out from the nearby suite and invited me in. Thankfully I got to watch the game from the suite and stay mostly dry and hang out with the Flatfoot 56/OllieMob crew! The Chicago Hounds won the championship and completed their undefeated season! After the game and after the shield trophy was presented, Flatfoot 56 played a short set in the rain and overcame the technical issues that came with playing in the rain. I captured the first song of the set, "Ollie Ollie" which they dedicated to one of the Hounds players Oliver Devoto who was retiring. I drove home Vanessa and Edie so they didn't have to wait in the rain during load out. It was a fun night!

06.22.2026 - 06.24.2026
On my commute home on Monday June 22nd, 2026, near McKinley Park on Damen Avenue, I was passed by a car which proceeded around another car waiting at the red light in the left waiting for the light to turn green. The driver proceeded into the intersection and turned left before the light turned green.

On Wednesday June 24th, 2026, Elphie's sister Chase and brother in law Chris were flying in to visit for a few days. Yet another storm hit. This one brought a tornado warning closer to where Jill lives. We started to drive to pick them up at the airport only to find the flight delayed another hour. We got home, I noticed on a flight tracker that their flight circled near Dayton, Ohio. We got to the airport to pick them up. Elphie went in as I waited in the cell phone lot. Elphie said there were a bunch of military veterans and military bands in the terminals. As I went back to pick everyone up, Cicero began to flood. We got home after detouring to avoid a slow moving train crossing Archer Avenue.

LIVE @ The Salt Shed (06.25.2026)
On Thursday June 25th, 2026, Chase and Chris were going to see Amigo The Devil with The Dead South at The Salt Shed. They had offered to buy us tickets but we weren't comfortable with the price tag. I kept an eye on the re-sell market and ended up getting Elphie and I tickets in the afternoon for less than half of face value! So we also went to the Salt Shed to see the show. While I was at work, they ordered Falco's Pizza getting the deep dish style. I got home, had a couple slices of pizza then we headed out to the show and got there without too much trouble. A selfie outside the venue was necessary, apparently. We passed through security without any issue and got to our grandstand seats which happened to be on opposite sides of the venue from each other. It turned out seats next to Elphie and I were not purchased so Chris and Chase made their way over to where we were for the Dead South set and being in our separate corners for Amigo The Devil. I captured clips from both bands and the night was enjoyable. The Salt Shed is a surprisingly well done venue. After the show, I drove them down the Magnificent Mile and we drove over to where a new goth night is happening but there was no parking and it was pretty late. Before I could go to bed though, we had to introduce Chris and Chase to Malört.

06.26.2026
On Friday June 26th, 2026, Elphie took Chris and Chase through the city going to the Bean, the Crown Fountain, and a few other sites. They met me at work and we proceeded north toward Highland Park for a comedy event at Madame Zuzu's. We drove on US-41 passing the Bahá'í Temple. We ate at a place called Michael's where I got a Buffalo burger. The comedy was decent at Madame Zuzu's and we hung around a bit after. We then drove by Michael Jordan's gate and then the Home Alone House after passing a cool looking church. As we returned to the city, I missed the turn I meant to take and the new detour ended up having us waiting at a light at the Grosse Point Lighthouse. We also passed the Bahá'í Temple again. In the city, we were able to see the Lindbergh Beacon on the Palmolive Building enhanced by the fog. We ended up going by the Obama Presidential Center again as well as a golden lady statue before heading back to the house. Chase and Chris had an early flight in the morning.

06.27.2026
On Saturday June 17th, 2026, we attended the graduation of Bobby which included acoustic performances from 6'10, Death And Memphis, and Flatfoot 56. While there, we hung out with the Theisen's and other friends and saw some fireworks lit off by neighbors. We also captured some fireworks while leaving the Theisen's house.

A Shared Life: Winter In Chicago (January - March 2026)

The 2026 edition of the Winter In Chicago compilation of oue Shared Life footage began after the 12th Night/Epiphany Party with the Community Of The Holy Trinity. The first clip of footage is my disappointment over the Monday Night Football playoff loss by the Pittsburgh Steelers ending the season. I ran it through the end of March with a visit to the future site of the men's program shelter for where I work.

Much of the footage covers the winter weather including several fog events and "sea smoke" on Lake Michigan. Elphie visited her friend and a regular travel partner Debbie in Seattle while I worked on the final steps of my processing the deer I harvested while hunting. I attended a few shows which were mostly at Reggies and we spent time with the Ollie Mob for the annual Whirlyball meet up in February.

My mom was suspected of having a cancer in her eye so we were graced by the presence of my parents throughout March, including on her birthday. I of course partook of Shamrock Shake Season as well. I thought I had captured but during processing I could not find it a video clip of a protest sign about McKinley Park. Unfortunately it is not included for that reason.

01.12.2026 - 01.29.2026
On Monday January 12th, 2026, I disappointedly had to endure watching the Pittsburgh Steelers lose in the first round of the playoffs and end their season. I hung up my Terrible Towel in shame. During the morning commute on January 23rd, 2026, as the Arctic air was beginning to hit Chicago, I witnessed "sea smoke" on Lake Michigan. The water temperature was considerably warmer than the air temperature causing steam to rise up off the lake as it began to freeze over. On Saturday January 24th, 2026, I worked my way through what I could of the liver from the deer I harvested to make tacos for Elphie and I. We also utilized the tongue. We had a decent snow storm hit on Sunday January 25th, 2026 and on Monday January 26th, 2026 I captured a view of Lake Michigan frozen over along the shore as beyond.

LIVE @ Reggies (01.30.2026)
On Friday January 30th, 2026, I went to Reggies to catch a ska show headlined by The Toasters. I saw The Toasters many years ago in 2012 when they played on Valentine's Day at The 86. It was an odd show for The 86 and I think they were trying to fill a gap in their tour. Chris Human got a call and decided to go for it. It was cool to see them again. The Operators and Todd Hembrook and the Seance played the show as well. I captured "Tango" by The Operators and "Don't Let The Bastards Grind You Down" by The Toasters. Thinking back, I wonder if they were permitted to play that one at The 86?

01.31.2026 - 02.14.2026
On Sunday February 1st, 2026, we stopped by Krispy Kreme for their Hershey specialist doughnuts. They were alright. On Groundhog Hog Day Monday February 2nd, 2026, it was very foggy in Chicago. I also captured some footage of the ice on Lake Michigan. On Super Bowl Sunday February 8th, 2026, I made some venison sloppy joe to eat. On Monday February 9th, 2026, I captured some footage of the ice on Lake Michigan once again. On Tuesday February 10th, 2026, Elphie wanted to capture some images of her hair after bleaching it then after adding color. On Wednesday February 11th, 2026, Elphie left to go to Seattle for Debbie's birthday shenanigans. I watched Olympic hockey with the Swedish National team getting a win over Germany. On Thursday February 12th, 2026, Elphie captured a shot of her with Mount Ranier in the background. I watched the Danish national team play hockey. On Friday February 13th, 2026, I captured footage of Stein complaining about how he isn't getting enough attention. On Saturday February 14th, 2026, I watched more olympic hockey while roasting then boiling the leg bones from my deer I harvested. This would be used to make a bone broth. Elphie and Debbie spent their evening in Portland, Oregon.

LIVE @ Reggies (02.14.2026)
On Saturday February 14th, 2026 I attended a Valentine's Day show at Reggies with the Koffin Kats, The Last Gang, Crazy And The Brains, and Clear Coat. I was hoping to capture a song where the Koffin Kats would stand on the stand-up bass but the internet failed me in its suggestions as to which songs that might happen. I captured the end of the set with "Koffin Kats Rock." It was the first time seeing The Last Gang. I captured "WFTW" by them. it was also the first time I saw Clear Coat. I captured "Hold On" by Crazy And The Brains. I have seen them a few times now. It was a good show.

LIVE @ Liar's Club (02.15.2026)
On Sunday February 15th, 2026, I went to the Liar's Club "Church of the Broken Heart" matinee show. On the way, my drive was impeded slightly by some dirt bikers crossing over Western. Sally Grayson was in the states for a short visit and was able to get booked to do this show. Even though it was meant to be a matinee, it didn't start until closer to 6pm and the last band of the evening, The Pandamnits didn't arrive til around 7pm or so. It was good to see Sally though and hang out a bit. The Shaws were able to make it out as well and Skot might have been able to work on getting Leper's foot in the door at some point. I captured Sally doing "Wicked Game" with the Pandamnits, ""Crooked Crow" by Iris Marlowe, and "Melt Into Your Arms" by Sally Grayson.

https://youtu.be/vKrhJdK1lOs

I decided to capture Sally Grayson's newest song as well titled "To Be Loved." I didn't make it viewable until after she had officially fully released it to the world in March in hopes of giving her time to get the word out and hopefully get some listeners to the song moreso than to get views on my channel. I don't know if it worked out that way or not.

I actually left the show a bit early because I was very hungry, ha! I stopped to get a Chicago Deep Dish Pizza from Falco's for dinner. Elphie and Debbie continued the birthday shenanigans in Portland, Oregon.

02.16.2026 - 02.27.2026
On Monday February 16th, 2026, I bagged up the bone broth for future use and put them in the freezer. There was an ice cream truck out due to the unseasonably warm weather. I also spent the evening boiling the skull from the deer I harvested to keep. There was quite a bit of damage to the bones of the skull and I will determine if I want to try to glue it back together or not. Elphie and Debbie visited Vancouver, B.C. Tuesday February 17th, 2026 was Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras and Paczki Day! I got a Paczki at work. On Ash Wednesday February 18th, 2026, there had been a mud rain overnight, coating vehicles parked out in the weather with mud and dirt. Debbie made Elphie a fancy dinner. On Thursday February 20th, 2026, Elphie made her way back to Chicago. I had my first Shamrock Shake of the season.

Ollie Mob Whirlyball Meet-up (02.28.2026)
Saturday February 28th, 2026 was the annual Ollie Mob Whirlyball Meet Up in Vernon Hills, Illinois. We had a decent turn out. I utilized the AI image Tobin created as a flyer and after the games we went to Portillo's as usual for dinner and more hanging out. I actually somewhat figured out how to shoot the ball more accurately this year and scored a few long range shots for my team! It was a good time as usual at the whoppin' speed of 4 miles per hour!

03.01.2026 - 03.02.2026
On Sunday March 1st, 2026, my parents came out to Chicago for a visit. It happened to be my mom's birthday. Elphie sang the song and we had made venison stew and bought some cake for the occasion. My mom was found to potentially have a cancerous spot on her eye and Chicago's Northwestern University Medical Centers were one of the few places where treatment could take place. This visit was more to see the situation in the eye and set up for the treatment process in the coming weeks. On Monday March 2nd, 2026 we went to Cheesie's for dinner and stopped by Andy's for custard.

LIVE @ The Salt Shed (03.03.2026)
I attended a show at The Salt Shed for the first time on Tuesday March 3rd, 2026. Dropkick Murphys were headlining their Saint Patrick's tour with The Aggrolites, Haywire, and Slugger. There was a special edition vinyl split for sale of Dropkick Murphys and Haywire that I made sure to pick up before the show. After the show, Kyle Bawinkel was set up in the Three Top Lounge upstairs. While I waited for traffic to clear out, I went up and hung with Kyle for a few minutes. I captured "Citizen ICE" by Dropkick Murphys, "Til The Wheels Fall Off" by TheAggrolites, and "New England Forever" by Haywire. Both the songs I captured of Dropkick Murphys and Haywire featured each other. The sound in The Salt Shed is surprisingly good. It seems to be a generally well built venue and I could mostly see ok though the usual tall folks found their way in front of me, ha!

03.04.2026 - 03.13.2026
On Wednesday March 4th, 2026, we got dinner at Huck Finn's in the neighborhood. On Friday March 6th, 2026, I captured the fog during the morning commute. Coming home in the evening I captured lightning during the thunderstorm.

LIVE @ Reggies (03.14.2026)
On Saturday March 14th, 2026, we went to Reggies for the annual Saint Patrick's show of Flatfoot 56. They were celebrating twenty years of the album Knuckles Up. Justin made the trip out for the show and did some guest vocals and drumming on a few of the Knuckles Up era tunes where he sang lead. I captured "Chi-Town Beatdown" from that set. Also on the bill was Downtown Struts, Liberty And Justice, and Won't Stay Dead. I didn't realize it until after the show had ended but I apparently paused the recording during Liberty And Justice. Sorry! They were really good too. It was a fun night and we got to see quite a few friends throughout. I decided to stay up where Elphie likes to hide in the loft area. She can sit on soft chairs and I was able to stand to the side without blocking any views to capture the video.

03.15.2026 - 03.31.2026
On Saint Patrick's Day Tuesday March 17th, 2026, I got my last Shamrock Shake of the season. The era of live streaming must have ended as well because we were not treated to a Dropkick Murphys Saint Patrick's Day stream. On Friday March 20th, 2026, I captured some footage of folks encouraging attendance for a "No Kings" rally coming up. My parents had also returned to Chicago for a procedure for my mom's eye. We visited them while they had a nice hotel stay and I got to use the pool for a bit. On Sunday March 22nd, 2026, we took my parents to church at Hope Church Midway then had lunch at the Red Barrel. It was very good. On Thursday March 26th, 2026, I captured some footage of the fog rolling through Chicago on my evening commute home. On Sunday March 29th, 2026, we saw a strange helicopter coming into Chicago and landing somewhere in the city as we made our way north to The Alley. We later went south to Wasted Youth Tattoo and PMA Piercing so Elphie could get some supplies before utilizing our gift card at a Texas Roadhouse along the way home. On Monday March 30th, 2026, I got to visit The Haven which will be the new location for the Cornerstone Community Outreach men's program. It will be where I work. When the ideas were being brainstormed early in the process of this endeavor, we were asked for anything we may want and I asked about EV charging. Two level 2 EV chargers were installed and I was able to utilize one while on our visit. We got to see the rooms, the offices, the kitchen and dining area, as well as a few other spots. We hope to be moving the program into the location soon.

Additional soundtrack includes "Stirb Im Winter" by :Wumscut:, "Love's Harsh Winter" by Black Swift, "Winter Fog" by Lauren Peacock, "The Worker's Song" by Bealtaine, and "Zielona Gora" by The Rumjacks.

Footage filmed using an iPhone 12 and 14 and Crosstour CR-900 by Elphie and Joel A. Swanson. Titles and other animations created and project edited using Final Cut Pro X on a Mac Mini by Joel A. Swanson.

A Shared Life: The Holidays - December in Chicago, Southern Family Christmas, New Years (12.03.2025 - 01.10.2026)

This project highlights the happenings after our return from Pennsylvania through the 12th Night/Epiphany party at the Community of the Holy Trinity about a week after our return from southern Christmas. This covers December in Chicago and the rest of the holiday season. I separated out all the hunting related footage into its own project and blog.

December in Chicago

12.03.2025 - 12.04.2025

As I left for work on Wednesday December 3rd, 2025, There was plenty of snow on the ground from the storm we missed while in Pennsylvania. The Chicago dips had been activated as evidenced by the parking chairs. I also captured some footage of the Chicago skyline as I made my way to work. As I left in the morning of Thursday December 4th, 2026, I had to utilize some blankets to clear condensation from the interior of my windshield. Elphie captured a few shots of Stein wearing his new bow tie. On my way home I passed a tow truck towing a Cook County Sheriff bus.

12.05.2025
On Friday December 5th, 2025, I stuck around for a bit after work in the Uptown area during the Winter Walk on Wilson to catch Glenn Kaiser and Hilde Bialach play at Everybody's Coffee. Hilde played some Christmas instrumentals on cello while Glenn Kaiser played a bunch of blues tunes and finished it off with a few Christmas tunes. Afterward Glenn said he was using the time to sort of work through a set list he was intending to utilize in some upcoming shows including on New Year's Eve in Cincinnati.

12.06.2025 - 12.19.2025
As we went to get groceries on Saturday December 6th, 2025, we were driving down Western Avenue in the left lane when a car passed us in the oncoming northbound lanes and turning lanes. The car had to return to the rightful southbound lanes as there was a tow truck sitting in the median/turning lanes but eventually went back into the turning and oncoming traffic lanes to pass a few more people.

As I left the house on Monday December 8th, 2025 to go to work, ice had formed on tree branches and the top of our steps making it a bit treacherous. I put down some salt upon my return from work later that evening. On Wednesday December 17th, 2025, we held our Christmas party for the men's program at Cornerstone Community Outreach. As I drove home, I decided to capture the city lights as I drove on Lake Shore Drive, including the Lincoln Park Zoo Lights from that view. On Thursday December 18th, 2025, I utilized the new BP Pulse "Gigahub" near O'Hare International Airport to charge as they were offering one cent per kilowatt hour as the rate meaning I could charge for like 15 cents total. I watched a number of airplanes pass overhead and tried to watch the Penguins hockey game. As I drove there and back home, I captured some Christmas lights in Rosemont and on the Novak Construction building. On Friday December 19th, 2025 I took lunch break at the Christkindlmarket at Wrigley Field where I had pierogis from the Prince of Pierogi booth and picked up some Christmas soda and Chocokuss from the Sweets Barn. On my drive home, I went down Clark and through the city on Michigan Avenue and State to capture the city Christmas light displays. Back home, I worked on getting all the band uniforms loaded into the car along with our necessary luggage and gifts. It was a struggle but I got it all in!

12.20.2025 - 12.23.2025
On Saturday December 20th, 2025, we left to head south for Christmas. We stopped in Hobart, Indiana to pick up some gummies at the Albanese Confectionary. We had a quick charge there then continued south. We stopped at a Pilot/Flying J to utilize the EVGo network as we still had some credits to use. We decided this was a better stop than the Layfayette, Indiana Electrify America at a Wal*Mart as it is often busy. I was looking ahead on the app and it seemed likely all those chargers would be in use so we opted for the EVGo and I think it worked out alright. We stopped one more time in Indianapolis, Indiana then headed to Cincinnati where we were able to meet up with the Humans again. This time we chose the Norwood area where we could connect to a charger. We ate at Tom + Chee and caught up for a bit. We ended up charging to 100% inadvertently. Same thing happened last year, ha! I was able to pick up some coffee as well to replenish our supply. We ended the night staying at the Sheehy's.

We spent the day on Sunday December 21st, 2025 in the Cincinnati area. We hoped to see a few friends. Lisa was unable to make it happen but we saw Josiah. We stopped by The 86 and the Humans had instructed the staff to treat us to the drinks we got. After hanging out there for a bit, we continued over to Martino's On Vine to watch the Steelers game and eat large strombolis. Josiah met up with us for this part. It was a good time and the Steelers beat the Lions. We ended the evening hanging out with the Sheehy's again.

On Monday December 22nd, 2025, we resumed our drive south for Christmas, passing the good old Florence Ya'll. Our first stop in mid Kentucky was at a Buc-Ee's to charge. We also got brisket and I got a large Orange Dream soda. We had another stop at the end of Kentucky at a Wal*Mart and I was able to get a bottle of Ale-8-One to drink for the road. We had to delay picking up the cases because of our overly full car. While there, we saw a car decorated with Christmas lights being held on by blue tape. We continued about 10 minutes, stopping at the Tennessee Welcome Center because it is always decorated and Elphie likes it. As we made our way up the mountain, we passed Stinking Creek Road, the remains of an apparently abandoned amusement park and the large cross by the adult store on our way toward Knoxville. We stopped to charge again at Buc-Ee's in Knoxville then continued on our way. We drove through on I-40 which had been washed out in part during the hurricane remnants in 2024. While the highway is reopened, the southbound side is still considerably damaged and in some places, completely gone. But there is work being done and one can pass through, just somewhat slower. I included some footage of this as we drove. We arrived in Asheville, North Carolina and met up with our friends, the Floyd's at a restaurant called Daddy Mac's Down Home Dive which was a nice visit and good food. Elphie and I decided to get a hotel for the night, picking one with a charger so we were not dependent on charging while meeting with the Floyd's.

Southern Family Christmas: 12.24.2025 - 12.30.2025
On Tuesday December 23rd, 2025, we made our way to Gastonia, North Carolina. Immediately upon arriving in town, we went to R.O.'s BBQ as we learned during the drive it would be closing at the end of the week. One of Elphie's friends met us there with his kid and we enjoyed the meal. There was a long line out the door and remained busy the entire time we were there. We arrived at Elphie's sister's house where we stayed and hung out for the evening. We left shortly before 8pm to finish the delivery of the band uniforms in Bessemer City, North Carolina. It was nice to unload and free up the car! It didn't seem the weight made a huge difference in the performance or efficiency of the car. It was nice to be rid of the uniforms nonetheless.

On Wednesday December 24th, 2025, we returned to R.O.'s for more BBQ. Elphie had hoped to get a shirt but the guy in front of me in line got the last one. We had several more friends visit with us there including the Burk's and Elphie's mom. We spent a little time with her as well at her place for Christmas Eve.

On Christmas Day, Thursday December 25th, 2025, we did the usual visiting with family as they opened gifts. Elphie's nephew made a surprise homecoming early! We also visited with the Burk's at their house for a while. We obliged on adding some graffiti to Dwayne's old Jeep. It was a good visit.

On Friday December 26th, 2025, we went to Dynasty Buffet for a Chinese buffet with Elphie's cousin. We also got some Krispy Kreme afterwards. The first part of the Southern Family Christmas gathering was on Saturday December 27th, 2025. On Sunday December 28th, 2025, after a terrible football game for the Steelers and Carolina Panthers both, we visited with Elphie's brother and got a great meal at Big Daddy's. On Monday December 29th, 2025, Elphie's brother in law had a birthday so we went to Texas Roadhouse. On Tuesday December 30th, 2025, we took some nieces and nephews to Monster Mini Golf. We also played some basketball arcade game and air hockey. After a quick stop at Krispy Kreme again, we had the second part of the Southern Family Christmas.

New Year's: 12.31.2025 - 01.01.2026
We ended up staying in North Carolina for New Year's this year. On New Year's Eve, Wednesday December 31st, 2025, we visited with a few of Elphie's friends before settling in for the televised ball drops. We had some pizza, drinks, and I was also able to watch some hockey broadcasts during the evening. New Year's Day, Thursday January 1st, 2026 was spent eating the southern traditional foods and I watched the Penguins game later that evening. We mostly relaxed as we were about to embark on the long drive back. This year we decided to take a different route putting us through Nashville.

01.02.2026 - 01.04.2026
We left in the morning Friday January 2nd, 2026 enroute to Nashville. We had to make our first stop in Asheville for a charge. We didn't need much and the car probably hadn't warmed to its fullest potential so it seemed to take longer than it should to charge for what we needed. We captured footage of the scenery as we went then stopped for another charge on the eastern side of Knoxville. Almost all of the charges happened to be at Wal*Marts. We passed at least one large cross on this route through Tennessee...possibly in Crossville. As we arrived in the Nashville area, we stopped to charge in Opryland at the mall. We got dinner while we charged then walked around the mall until it was nearly closed. We drove around to see the Grand Ole Opry and also saw the Paula Deen restaurant and an entrance to a showboat. We ended our drive at an AirBnB managed by our friend Natalie which is the Patsy Cline Dream Home. It was an interesting place to stay and we captured some footage of the house after we got in and somewhat situated.

On Saturday January 3rd, 2026, we spent most of the day relaxing. Marnee and Bryan came by and got to check out the house. We went out to dinner at Twin Peaks where we got to watch some of the football games. We relaxed the rest of the evening as well, catching a streaming movie then getting to bed a bit early with the long drive coming on Sunday.

Sunday January 4th, 2026 we made our way back to Chicago. I decided to route us in such a way that most of the northern part of the drive would be through Illinois. Our first few charging stops were once again at Wal*Marts. I took advantage of our stop in Paducah, Kentucky to pick up some Ale 8-One to bring back. Part of my plan for this route was making a quick pit stop in Metropolis, Illinois and seeing the Superman statue. There is also a Super Museum in Metropolis. We checked out the gift shop but didn't actually go into the museum. As we continued north, we passed through some apparent tornado damage and then the town of Effingham with its large cross. We stopped in Champaign for a charge and used that time to get some groceries for the week. We had one other stop in Bradley, Illinois. From Champaign on, I had on the Steelers football game streaming through my phone so we could know what was going on. The game ultimately determined who went on to the playoffs - The Steelers or The Ravens. As we neared home, we encountered a driver on Pershing Road who veered to the right and ended up hitting the curb pretty hard it seemed. They tried to turn north on the southbound McKinley Park leg of Damen Avenue then continued on down the road before turning north on Western Boulevard. Back home we were greeted as usual by Stein and his need to be on us or touching us which also often results in him waking us up the first few nights. We also got to see the Steelers win!
01.05.2026 - 01.10.2026
The remaining footage I included in this project was the first week back in Chicago after our southern Christmas trip. On Monday January 5th, 2026, we were able to watch the Swedish national junior team win the IIHF World Junior National Championship. We watched the broadcast in Swedish as well which was fun though we understood nearly none of what was being said. On Friday January 9th, 2026 as I parked to go into work I noticed two cars very poorly parked nearby. Saturday January 10th, 2026 was the 12th Night/Epiphany party at the Community of the Holy Trinity house. We provided a venison stew. I watched the Bears game to some extent with Zach and we had a good time hanging out with folks to conclude the Christmas and Holiday season.

Additional soundtrack includes "Sing A Christmas Chorus With Me" by Ronnie Martin, "O Come, O Come Emmanuel (2025 version)" by Leper, "The Child With The Star On His Head" by Teel Short, "We Wish You A Merry Christmas" by The Uh Ohs, The Oh Hellos Family Christmas, "Mary Did You Know" by Ninth Sphere, "I Saw Three Ships/Joy To The World Medley" by Michael W. Smith, "Slow Christmas" by Kentucky Nightmare, "Christmas Is Now Drawing Near At Hand" by James Elkington, "Merry Christmas To Me" Emery, "On Christmas Day" by Erik Koskinen, "Ring, Ring Ring" by Rex Hobart And The Misery Boys, "Auld Lang Syne" by The Lonesome Travelers, "Plasma For Christmas" The Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band, "Silent Night" by Wynona, "Crazy" by Patsy Cline, "We Three Kings" by Toby Keith, and "Christ Was Born On Christmas Morn" by Found Wandering.
