A Shared Life: Spring In Chicago (April - June 2025)

https://youtu.be/0-hPt3RJwWw

The spring footage was captured starting with the beginning of April. We had intended to make a trip to Pennsylvania during Easter weekend but unfortunately had to cancel those plans due to an audit at my job. Elphie made a couple trips. One to North Carolina as her step dad passed and another to Florida to visit with family after they came to Chicago for a Navy graduation. My parents came out to Chicago to visit during Memorial Day weekend. We celebrated our 10th Anniversary with a two day house party for the weekend that included some live music. We departed for Audiofeed, with a side trip to Pennsylvania (to somewhat make up for the missed visit at Easter) on Thursday June 26th, 2025 which is the beginning of that video project.

April
04.01.2025 - 04.11.2025
On Tuesday April 1st, 2025 on april Fool's Day, I unfortunately captured some footage of a port-a-potty that had burnt down near a homeless camp at the Wilson Viaduct on my way into work.

On Saturday April 5th, 2025, I utilized the car wash while out to get groceries. I also happened upon one of the "Hands Off" Protests.

On Sunday April 6th, 2025, I went to the United Center for the hockey game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks ended up winning the game 3-1.

04.12.2025
On Saturday April 12th, 2025, I decided to make the trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan to catch the show Flatfoot 56 was playing with the Koffin Kats and Reckless Rhythms at The Pyramid Scheme. I researched how much time I would need to make the trip and get there on time, factoring in charging of course. I decided to pick up some soda to drink and decided to try out the Coca-Cola Orange Cream flavor. I could taste the orange slightly and it was basically an orangish cream soda. It was ok.

I made two charging stops as I made the trip and arrived at the show was about to begin. I had hoped to utilize a nearby parking garage with a charger but the chargers were in use when I was arriving, according to the app, so I parked on the street near a church. It seemed to be the same area I had parked in during a previous trip to Grand Rapids to see Flatfoot 56 playing at Skeletones. Skeletones happens to be located on the next block over from The Pyramid Scheme so the parking made sense. I hung with the Flatfoot 56 guys for a bit at the van and then a little after the show. I made my way in and saw Josh and talked with him a bit while Reckless Rhythms played and I captured the last song of their set. I moved to where the Smith's were hanging while Flatfoot 56 was setting up and sound checking. This was a side stage spot. I captured them performing "Work For Them." I stayed in that area and talked a bit with the Smiths while Koffin Kats got ready to play their set. The Smith's left during the set but I stayed in the spot and enjoyed the rest of the evening. After a little more conversation with the Flatfoot 56 guys, I began the drive back to Chicago.

During the drive back, I made one charging stop at one of the same locations I utilized on the trip out. There was a flock of seagulls flying around overhead in the dark! I made it back home a little after 2am with plenty of charge to make it to work on Monday so I didn't worry about doing another charge.

04.13.2025 - 04.18.2025
On Wednesday April 16th, 2025, while Elphie was flying back from North Carolina, her flight was delayed to wait for a corpse to be loaded into the cargo space of the aircraft. Elphie was able to watch from her window seat just over the loading area.

04.19.2025
On Saturday April 19th, 2025, Elphie and I decided to make a little road trip south to the Champaign Urbana area to see a house show at Jim and Jenny Eisenmengers' Front Porch. It was the first time we got to experience a Front Porch show and rather than on the front porch, it happened in the living room. The show featured The Dance Myth (Dan Smith from Listener), Derek Zanetti, and Spoken Nerd. I captured some footage from each artist - "Lunchtable Blues" by Spoken Nerd, "Meditation Wind Down" by Derek Zanetti, and "Playing Pretend" by The Dance Myth. We got to hang with the good folks who came out who we usually only see during Audiofeed and that was nice...and a good time!

04.20.2025 - 04.27.2205
On Easter Sunday April 20th, 2025, we attended a Disgraceland Wasteland Suspension and got some White Fence Farm Chicken to share. It was a fun day.

On Saturday April 26th, we offered Natalie and Mark a taste of Malört and captured the reaction. They stayed with us as they attended an event in the city.

04.28.2025
On Monday April 28th, 2025, during my commute I noticed someone took one of the rentable electric scooters onto the highway and apparently abandoned it.

That evening, we went to Liar's Club to see Me, Grimlock! with B-Plot and locals Tiger Uppercut and Steve's In The Band. Me, Grimlock! had an old friend from Cornerstone in the band, Colten, who played in Crush The Enemy with Skip Brooks. Colten was on vocals in that band. He came through Chicago with Me, Grimlock! last spring as well but unfortunately we couldn't make it because we were already committed to going to the Sessanta show with A Perfect Circle, Pucifer, and Primus. When Colten reached out this time around, I was happy to see we didn't have conflicting plans...other than my enjoyment of the first round of hockey playoffs.

All the bands were good and it was nice to catch up a bit in person with Colten. Tobin Bawinkel also made it out and it was good to talk with him a bit as well after Flatfoot 56 got to spend the weekend in Montreal at an Oi music fest.

04.29.2025 - 04.30.2025
Tuesday April 29th, 2025 was my 45th birthday. I got some deep dish from Falco's to celebrate. I took the rest of the week off utilizing PTO as well.

On Wednesday April 30th, 2025 we made a drive north to Gurnee where Elphie's family had gotten a VRBO space for her nephew's naval boot camp graduation. We had also stopped at The Sweden Shop along the way.

May
05.01.2025 - 05.08.2025
On Thursday May 1st, 2025, Elphie and I gave the Mountain Dew Baja Blast Cabo Citrus variant a try. It was pretty good. It was very orangey. We drove out to pick up some Giordano's deep dish for Elphie's nephew and the family and also stopped by Culver's for our own meal. On the way back we passed an interesting house with quite the decorations. Upon walking out to the car, we discovered a crack in the windshield.

On Friday May 2nd, 2025, Elphie's nephew wanted to spend his free day by visiting the Gurnee Mills Mall. We also went to Portillo's. While at the mall, we did some bowling and visited the arcade as well.

On Saturday May 3rd, 2025, Elphie and I took our time leaving the Gurnee area and visited a few sites from Atlas Obscura. The first was called "Dead River" where a short river flows toward Lake Michigan but often cannot overpower the waves of the lake to break through the sandbar. On this particular day though, the sandbar did appear to have been breached, the lake water may have been flowing into the river rather than the river flowing out into the lake. We also stopped by Onan's Golden Pyramid House nearby in Wadsworth, Illinois. We returned to the mall because Elphie had a few things she wanted to pick up at Spencer's for our 10th Anniversary Party and check out a few other stores as well. From there, we decided to head north into Wisconsin and visit the Mars Cheese Castle again. Among other things that we picked up for the party, I got a couple of Sprecher Fire Brewed Sodas, and Orange Cream and Cherry. After hitting a Meijer for some groceries, we began to head back south toward home, stopping off at the Leaning Tower of Niles. It is a replica of the Italian Leaning Tower of Pisa. I had read something about construction plans and possible demolition but it seems to be for a building nearby instead. Glad we got to see it anyway!

On Monday May 4th, 2025, I tried the Sprecher Fire Brewed Orange Dream Soda and it was pretty good.

On Tuesday May 5th, 2025, I tried the Sprecher Fire Brewed Cherry Soda...it also was pretty good.

On Wednesday May 6th, 2025, during my commute to work I happened to pass by as police were trying to push a disabled car off the street on Damen Avenue. During my commute home, I passed by a protest to "Stop Trump's Cruelty" on the pedestrian bridge at North Avenue Beach over Lake Shore Drive. I also noticed a lot of smoke in the neighborhood as I approached on Pershing Road. There was a garage fire, apparently.

05.09.2025
On Friday May 9th, 2025, I decided to catch a ska show at Cobra Lounge. Stop The Presses was on it along with a few other bands I wasn't as familiar with - I Voted For Kodos, Devon Kay And The Solutions, Stacked Like Pancakes, and Rude Echoes (I had caught Rude Echoes once before). The doors opened at 6pm and I was able to get parked around 6:30pm. I ate a quick dinner then went inside just as Rude Echoes finished up (sorry for missing it.) Stop The Presses went on next and I captured a clip of "Fat Cat." I have enjoyed them since catching a set some years back and it was fun once again! Stacked Like Pancakes played next and I captured a song featuring Devon Kay. Devon Kay and the Solutions played the next set. The show closed with I Voted For Kodos and I once again captured a song featuring Devon Kay. It was a fun night.

Elphie captured some footage of Kat's new cat as she stayed there to help out for a few days.

On Saturday May 10th, 2025, Sally Grayson had a show at Uncommon Ground in Lakeview/Wrigleyville area with Luscia Jane Band. It was good to catch a show from Sally as she's in the states for a bit. I captured the opening song - "The Darkness In Me." Luscia Jane Band closed the night and I captured "The Tree Song" from their set. It was cool to see Sally and we got a few minutes to chat afterwards.

05.11.2025 - 05.17.2025
On Tuesday May 13th, 2025, there was a foggy commute. Elphie was with me as she developed a tooth ache and hoped to get some relief from the dentist. Unfortunately, she had to have a tooth pulled. It is also the day she celebrates her birthday. I brought her some ice cream after work.

On Friday May 16th, 2025 during my commute home, an alert went out over my phone about an emergency situation. It turned out to be a dust storm coming toward Chicago. I didn't really believe it at first. As I drove south on I-55, I noticed the brown color in the sky as it moved closer. I almost made it home before it hit. The street appeared hazy from the dust in the air. I put on my bandana over my face and my sunglasses as I exited the car and checked the mail. It was a strange thing to experience.

On Saturday May17th, 2025, we decided another car wash was in order after the dust storm. There was dust that had collected on the door knob and other surfaces of the house. After getting groceries, we visited Krispy Kreme to get the PacMan themed donuts which were great!

05.18.2025
On Sunday May 18th, 2025, I released the newest music video I helped edit for Leper of the song "If I Die" from the "Red Words" album. I wrote more about it all here.

Here is the video:

05.19.2025 - 05.22.2025
On my commute home on Wednesday May 21st, 2025, I noticed a car dragging a tarp. It might have been on purpose...maybe they had a short drive to get to the storage units and figured dragging the tarp was the best way to transport whatever they had.

05.23.2025 - 05.27.2025: Parent Visit
My parents came for a visit over Memorial Day weekend. While not documented, we made a dinner for them of venison chops, mashed potatoes, salad, and an Oreo Ice Cream Cake on Friday May 23rd, 2025.

On Saturday May 24th, 2025, we took my parents out to see a few things and visited some book stores. We drove by The Duck Inn that my mom had mentioned seeing on some television show and then the "Zion Evangelic Lutheran Ghost Church." We were near a couple of book stores so we checked those out as my mom was in pursuit of the Nancy Drew collection. I dropped them off at Pilsen Community Book Shop and upon arriving, they found quite a stash of the books. Unfortunately the person working didn't seem interested in selling them but my mom got the information of the store owner who later called to offer to sell them. We walked from there to Pilsen Open Books where one could donate whatever they wanted for books. My mom began having some issues that seemed to be due to low blood sugar or something diabetic related so we tried to help out the best that we could. I got the car and pulled it up to the storefront. It happened to be next to the Ghost Church. After this, we went to Portillo's for dinner then drove over to Navy Pier for the first fireworks of the season. My mom had seemingly recovered for the most part by this time and checked out a few of the stores before we made our way to the end of the pier for the fireworks viewing.

On Sunday May 25th, 2025, we took my parents to The Sweden Shop again. We were there as it closed. We drove them around the Uptown neighborhood, showing where I worked and a few other things. We then drove out to Schaumburg to the Ikea where we had dinner and my mom shopped the rest of the evening.

On Memorial Day, Monday May 26th, 2025, we took my parents to the Museum of Science and Industry. On the way, we stopped at Pilsen Community Book Shop again so my mom could buy all the Nancy Drew books she wanted. I took them to the hall with the cars and ships first, figuring my dad would like to see the cars. We visited the farm area, the steel exhibit, the new space area, and showed them the model train exhibit, the tornado, and the Tesla coil. When the museum closed, we left to get dinner at Cheesie's. We went to the location closer to home in Garfield Ridge on Archer which we hadn't ever visited before. It had a slightly different menu. It had been a Lindy's Chili and Gurdy's Ice Cream and seemed to be still serving some of that menu as well. We all seemed to enjoy the meal then headed back to the house.

05.28.2025 - 05.31.2025
On my commute home on Friday May 30th, 2025, there was another protest to "Stop Trump's Cruelty' on the pedestrian bridge at North Avenue Beach over Lake Shore Drive that I captured using the Crosstour CR-900.

June
06.01.2025 -
06.07.2025
On Saturday June 7th, 2025, Elphie and I went to see Lords Of Acid at Bottom Lounge with Little Miss Nasty and Lucia Cifarelli opening as well as DJ Alley Kat. I picked an area I thought would be decent for watching but a large man decided to move directly in front of us and seemed as though there was intent to be in the way of viewing. It is frustrating when you get to a show early to try to get in a spot that you can see then that happens after the show has begun. Oh well.

06.08.2025 - 06.12.2025
On Monday June 9th, 2025, there was another protest against Trump on the bridge but this time it protested "No Kings." Elphie captured some of the lightning from the hotel in Pensacola, Florida while she visited with her family on their summer vacation.

On Thursday June12th, 2025 we picked up the cupcakes from Smallcakes that Elphie had ordered for our anniversary party. She got four flavors: Chocolate Cherry, Chocolate Espresso, one with strawberry and a blue one due to blue being a color theme for 10th anniversaries.

06.13.2025
On our 10th Anniversary, June 13th, 2025, we finally had a Friday the 13th for an anniversary date! We didn't end up doing much...Elphie continued to prepare the house for the anniversary celebration and I went to see The Rumjacks play at the Beat Kitchen with Crazy and the Brains and Pure Intention. It was a pretty packed show and I was able to get in a spot by the wall about halfway into the room and could see pretty well most of the night from that spot! I captured "Bullhead" by The Rumjacks. Tobin Bawinkel was there and we chatted for a few minutes before heading out.

06.16.2025 - 06.20.2025
On Friday June 20th, 2025, during my commute home I captured a damaged transfer truck on the ramp from I-90/94 to I-55. Flatfoot 56 played an acoustic show in the neighborhood where the brothers in the band grew up at Twisted Shamrock Pub. It was a good time with the guys and some friends and they provided pizza from Stunod's which was pretty good. I captured a clip of "Cotton Fields" as well as some bagpipe jams.

06.21.2025 - 06.26.2025
On Tuesday June 24th, 2025, I captured the Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain shooting into the Chicago River. Ive noticed this a few times during my commute home but it was the first time I captured it. It was apparently offline for some years. I also captured some footage of the preparations for the NASCAR race. As I took the Damen exit off of I-55, I noticed a brownish hue in the sky again and wondered if we were about to get another dust storm. I made a quick update video of camera and equipment upgrades for what I do with TigerRAWk but I forgot to post it until after returning from Audiofeed. I also collected and cleaned up the bones to be used at the Bare Bones site at Audiofeed.

https://youtu.be/3if67bZJ2oA

On Wednesday June 25th, 2025, there was a thick fog over the city which I captured on my commute home using my Crosstour CR-900. I captured a couple clips on my commute home on Thursday June 26th, 2025 as well prior to our departure for our Audiofeed trip with the added visit to Pennsylvania on the front end. We left a bit early this year, utilizing bereavement from the passing of Elphie's step father.

Additional soundtrack includes "Springtime" by KNOTTS, "Man Is Like A Spring Flower" by Lingua Ignota, "In The Navy" by Village People, "Navy Blue" by Floorbird, "Lust For Gold" by Starflyer 59, "The Dust Storm" by Quiet Science, "Coming Back To Life" by Blindside, "Nikola Tesla" by Joy Electric, and "City Of Industry" by The Lassie Foundation.

Footage filmed using a Canon Rebel T6siPhone 12 and 14 and Crosstour CR-900 by Elphie and Joel A. Swanson. Titles and other animations created and project edited using Final Cut Pro X on a Mac Mini by Joel A. Swanson.
