Saint Patrick's Day 2009 was spent in Louisville, KY. The celebration started at Chas' apartment where we concocted and consumed some Irish Swill (half 100% Apple Juice & half Jones Green Apple Soda) as is tradition since 2003, we also drove around to see the local happenings in the Highlands of Louisville.
Chas and I first celebrated Saint Patrick's on a date near the official holiday at MVNU in 2003. I was going through a rough time in my life at that time around the same time, I found some music by Flogging Molly that I compiled to a CD and we'd listen to it and decided we should have a Saint Patrick's Party so we tried to come up with something that looked like Green Beer but in order to abide by MVNU policy we had to go without the alcohol. At the time we decided to use dnl (7 up - upsidedown) and apple juice. It made for a highly sugared and caffeinated beverage. We also had Ale-8, Lucky Charms, & Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. The weather was nice so we were out in our courtyard sharing Saint Patrick's cheer with anyone who came near. It was so much fun we decided to continue the tradition.
In 2004, we tried hosting it in the Den at MVNU but it wasn't quite as good that the first time but we added some new music at this point. It was colder this year and Chas & I didn't live in the same apartment anymore. We didn't get along as well as we should have when we roomed together but realize now that we are darn good friends and probably could have worked through our differences back then a bit better. We did have our Original Swill though yet again as well as Lucky Charms and Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream.
In 2005, I was in PA during Saint Patrick's day and various others were scattered around in other places. There was no gathering amongst us in 2005.
The gathering was reinstated back at MVNU in Redwood dorm in 2006. I drove down from Mansfield. We chose a new ingredient in 2006 to go with the Apple Juice and so began the use of Jones Green Apple Soda in our mix. The Lucky Charms and Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream was again present.
In 2007, the Saint Patrick's gathering consisted of Gregor Reynolds and I at a MewithoutYou show in the Cincinnati area. Chas was unable to join us but we did consume some Irish Swill using Mountain Dew in place of the Green Apple Soda.
In 2008, we held the Saint Patrick's gathering in my Northside Cincinnati apartment. We had a group of college students from UC that included Chas' sister and we had several people come down from Dayton, Ohio. Chas came from Louisville and we returned to the use of Jones Green Apple Soda for our Irish Swill and once again had Lucky Charms and Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream. Our Irish playlist was complete with Flogging Molly, Dropkick Murphys, The Pogues, FlatFoot56, Ballydowse, The Bloody Irish Boys, The Tossers, Afro Celt Sound System, and The Gangs of New York soundtrack.
And so goes the history of the celebration of Saint Patrick's Day by Chas & I.
Music: "Whirl-y Reel" by Afro Celt Sound System.
